Borussia Dortmund star set to join the MLS

St. Louis City SC will be Major League Soccer’s 29th team, making their debut in the 2023 regular season.

According to Transfermarkt, the newly established MLS franchise is already prepared to announce their first signings and is in advanced talks with Roman Bürki to join the club in the summer.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper joined Borussia Dortmund in 2015, and his contract with the club expires on June 30, 2023. For many seasons, Bürki was the first choice, but this year he has been reduced to a more secondary role, with Gregor Kobel receiving the most minutes. He last appeared for the Bundesliga club in May, after falling behind Kobel, Marwin Hitz, and Luca Unbehaun.

The Swiss goalkeeper agreed to a two-year extension to his contract with Borussia Dortmund, which was set to expire next year. However, he intends to terminate that contract in order to relocate to St. Louis.

Bürki joined Dortmund from fellow Bundesliga club Freiburg in 2015. Following his arrival, he quickly established himself as a staple in the BvB, recording 83 clean sheets in 232 appearances for the club over the course of his seven-year tenure, before falling through the ranks.

Confirmation?

During the January transfer window, the Swiss goalkeeper received two proposals, one from Galatasaray and the other from FC Lorient, but no agreement was achieved.

Talks with St. Louis are said to be very advanced, and the MLS franchise will likely disclose the news soon. This transaction was made possible by St. Louis sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel, who previously worked for Hoffenheim and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The 2023 MLS season will begin in late February, and Bürki is anticipated to join the MLS team during preseason in mid-January.

St. Louis City SC is a newly formed MLS franchise, and the 2023 season will be their debut season!

What will he bring to the table?

Bürki fits the criteria nicely for the newly formed St. Louis City club, which needs players with the know-how to perform at the highest level.

The Swiss goalkeeper has played in the UEFA Champions League, as well as the Bundesliga and other German competitions. The Swiss veteran might be crucial to the club’s advancement.

St. Louis City has announced the signing of Hoffenheim striker Joo Klauss. The 25-year-old striker will have similar characteristics to Bürki. He has also played top-flight football versus Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.

The squad being built by Cornell at St. Louis City is becoming more and more impressive with each signing!
