The best team during the regular season claimed Major League Soccer's ultimate prize on Sunday as the Columbus Crew earned their first-ever MLS Cup with a 3-1 win against a game New York Red Bulls side in MLS Cup 2008 at The Home Depot Center.

If Sigi Schmid were a baseball manager -- Tommy Lasorda comes to mind -- he would've been able to copy the same lineup card with eight position players and just fill in the pitcher every day before handing it to the home plate umpire before the game.
When Eddie Gaven entered the league at 16 years old, he probably didn't anticipate that his first taste of MLS Cup would come against New York.

Kenny Cooper's promising career was knocked off track a season ago by a broken right leg. After a standout 2008, Cooper's career is firmly back on course, and the FC Dallas forward was rewarded Saturday with the MLS Comeback Player of the Year award and a spot on the 2008 Best XI team.

Columbus Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer is at his second MLS Cup but he said his first trip with Kansas City four years ago doesn't really count.
