The soccer rivalry between the United States and Mexico has been building steadily for several years, but this week things reached a whole new level.

Frustrated by their national team's inability to win on American soil for more than a decade, Mexican fans have turned to "voodoo" ahead of the World Cup qualifier between the sides on Feb. 11.

"Help end the losing streak so Mexico advances," screamed an advertisement (pictured above) in the Record newspaper, which offered fans the chance to collect coupons to exchange for a voodoo doll of a U.S. player at Radio Shack stores.

The much-awaited clash in Columbus kicks off CONCACAF final-round qualifying for both teams and will provide the winner with an ideal start to the campaign. Bob Bradley's U.S. team will go into the match as the favorite due to its impressive record at home, and it is expected the Mexican team may not find the conditions in chilly Columbus to its liking.

However, with thousands of Mexican fans getting their pins ready to inflict telepathic harm on the U.S. players, who knows what sort of impact the voodoo dolls could have? It is a fair bet that Landon Donovan dolls will prove to be the most popular, as the Los Angeles Galaxy striker, currently on loan with Bayern Munich, is a much-hated figure south of the border.

So what do you think about the voodoo saga? More importantly, will Sven-Goran Eriksson be cutting out coupons and heading down to his nearest Radio Shack in Mexico City to stock up?
