Howard unhappy with defense’s unrest
HOUSTON – Tim Howard identified the United States' defending against set pieces as the chief issue to emerge from the Americans' 2-2 draw with Mexico on Wednesday.
Bob Bradley's team took the lead twice only to be pegged back on both occasions by goals from Mexican center-back Jonny Magallon, who scored while making runs to the far post.
Defender Drew Moor was unable to effectively mark Magallon both times, and Howard voiced his frustration at the defensive mixup.
"We are disappointed we lost the lead twice," Howard said. "It is not good enough for us.
"There was a little bit of a problem obviously with the noise and miscommunication with new guys coming in, but at this level it is unacceptable. We will work on that and we will make sure we get it right next time."
Moor was drafted into the starting lineup after first choice right-back Steve Cherundolo was injured playing for his German Bundesliga club Hannover 96 last weekend. The FC Dallas player provided an excellent cross to set up the U.S.'s second goal for Jozy Altidore, but Moor was victimized twice at the back.
Still, Howard was delighted the Americans extended their unbeaten home streak against Mexico to 10 games.
"We kept the streak going and we can fight another day," he added. "It was always going to be emotional and passionate, but that is the best bit of the rivalry – the passion. It will always be intense and you have to respond to that. We are still getting results."
THOUGHT OF THE NIGHT
"What are my thoughts on the game? I scored!" – U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu on his opening goal against Mexico.
