Fulham joins hunt for Guzan

An American is being linked to a Premiership club. So it has to be Fulham, right?

Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan, according to my prolific mole, is the latest Major League Soccer player to draw interest from the struggling west London club, which is in danger of being relegated from the Premiership this season.

Guzan is due to spend next week training with Scottish giants Celtic in Glasgow and has caught the eye of that club's boss, Gordon Strachan, for some time.

It still seems as if the Scots are the frontrunner to sign him, but Fulham's track record of bringing in MLS players cannot be overlooked.

With Carlos Bocanegra, Brian McBride, Clint Dempsey and Kasey Keller already at Craven Cottage – and Kansas City Wizards striker Eddie Johnson due to join them next week subject to a work permit – the club has strong American connections.

Keller is still nursing an arm injury, so Guzan could step in as the No. 2 keeper and maybe pose a serious threat to first choice Antti Niemi.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

"We are just not at the same level as the big teams. There is a distance between us and them and our position has not changed much" – Claudio Ranieri, Juventus coach.
