Figo-ing nowhere

Luis Figo's agent, Miguel Macedo, felt compelled to play down a report in Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manh that the Inter Milan star had agreed to a $10 million contract to move to Major League Soccer.

But did he really need to bother? The original article was lacking in credibility, claiming that AEG still owns three teams despite the Chicago Fire having been sold months ago. Also, to suggest that Figo had agreed to a deal with the company but that his final destination had not been agreed upon was stretching belief.

Now, there is still a chance the Portuguese icon could come to America, but the simple fact is that he has not yet made up his mind. It seems as if he is using the prospect of a switch to the States as leverage to persuade Inter to offer him a non-playing role in its organization.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

"The chairmen are discussing it – and I hope it will be carried out" – Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka on the possibility of joining Chelsea during the January transfer window.
