FIFA’s new bio-sphere

Soccer has steadfastly resisted video technology for years, claiming that instant replays would take the unpredictability out of the game. However, it appears that FIFA is gradually warming to the possibility of using some science for the betterment of the game.

A bionic ball, designed by adidas and containing a microchip, can track whether it has crossed the line and potentially solve some contentious decisions.

I can understand why FIFA has been reluctant to embrace video replays, challenges and the like, as it would slow down the game. Yet there is little downside to this innovation, provided it is perfectly accurate.

Certainly, there are a few million Germans that wish it was in operation in 1966.
