Eddie off to USA United

As we told you two weekends ago, Eddie Johnson's move to the English Premier League is almost complete, with discussions between the Kansas City Wizards forward and Fulham well underway.

A Fulham source told Yahoo! Sports on Monday night (apologies to the aforementioned source for the lateness of the call UK time!) that everything should be finalized within the next couple of days. The transfer fee that will be quoted in the British press will be around $5 million, but that figure includes numerous add-ons and incentives based on things like whether Fulham remains in the Premiership and how many goals Johnson scores.

E.J., who will be given the responsibility of curing the club's goal-scoring drought, will receive a salary of close to $2 million per season. The length of the contract is not yet determined, but it will probably be either three or four years.

So Johnson will join fellow Americans Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra, Clint Dempsey and Kasey Keller. Fulham managing director David McNally has heavy control over the club's player signings and has strong contacts in the United States, hence the continuing spate of American imports. And even though the London side changed managers recently (with Roy Hodgson replacing the sacked Lawrie Sanchez), this move has been in the pipeline for a long time.

While the transfer will delight Johnson, U.S. national squad teammate Taylor Twellman faces disappointment. Championship side Preston North End's interest in him has cooled after resistance from Major League Soccer and the New England Revolution to a potential $2.5 million transfer, and there is little he can do.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

"This business is cutthroat. You want to strike while you are hot and if I have got an opportunity that is too good to turn down, then I have got to do what is best for my family" – Eddie Johnson to Yahoo! Sports on Nov. 8, 2007.
