Galaxy’s Beckham Could See Changes
After a particularly disappointing season that has seen the Los Angeles Galaxy shell out big bucks for David Beckham, but still remain in last place, there seem to be some major changes on the way for both the marquee player and the organization.
Team president Alexi Lalas indicated to media this week that the club plans to take a harder stand in making some fundamental changes over the next few months. Among those changes appears to be a change in the evaluation of English star David Beckham.
Lalas emphasized that Beckham’s self-evaluations would no longer be taken at face value and that, because of his large salary, more caution will be taken in dealing with Beckham. The organization is looking to protect their investment for the future and will take measures to ensure that he avoids the pitch until the injury is completely healed.

Hogwash. The Galaxy not only have a medical staff, but an insurance company; as do Adidas, MLS, and probably ESPN for that matter. Beckham’s “self-evaluations” would never have been taken at face value. Players are asked how they feel, not to read their own MRI’s, and a player that valuable to team and sponsors isn’t even allowed to decided what recreational activities they can take part in–let alone what risks they take that might jeopardize their careers (and investor’s returns).
I’m surprised that Mr Lalas has the nerve, especially as an ex-player, to try to lay off responsibility for when and how long Mr Beckham was on the pitch at his feet. Whether he begged to be or not (and competetive players ALWAYS beg to) is completely irrelevant. That decision is not the player’s job and if the Galaxy dodged it, they are even more responsible for the results. Clearly they made some serious mistakes, it happens, they should FINALLY just say so and move on in a more responsible manner. Something I thought they were doing, until I see Mr Lalas wasting more time reversing previous remarks, and disparaging his player along the way…two things that should not surprise me.
