The Good Doctor comes calling

Real Salt Lake hopes it has found the medicine for its goal-scoring woes by signing the man known in the United Kingdom as "The Good Doctor."

Kenny Deuchar, who joined Major League Soccer strugglers RSL from the Scottish Premier League club Gretna on Wednesday, is an intriguing character. A full-qualified doctor, he has continued to work part-time in the medical profession for most of his soccer career.

While his exploits in helping Gretna climb from lower-league obscurity to the top flight ensured Deuchar a high profile at home in Scotland, he had Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling to thank for gaining wider-spread fame.

After hearing of the 27-year-old's medical training, Stelling would always refer to him as The Good Doctor when announcing the scores on the popular Soccer Saturday program. Given that the Doc scored 38 times in the 2005-06 season, including six hat tricks, his nickname was heard often enough to stick.

Deuchar is a talented finisher. If RSL can keep him well supplied with chances, he will put them away.

He has not been awarded a massive designated player contract, so time will tell whether he decides to add to his MLS wage with a couple of stints at a Utah hospital.
