FIFA’s new bio-sphere
Soccer has steadfastly resisted video technology for years, claiming that instant replays would take the unpredictability out of the game. However, it appears that FIFA is gradually warming to the possibility of using some science for the betterment of the game.
A bionic ball, designed by adidas and containing a microchip, can track whether it has crossed the line and potentially solve some contentious decisions.
I can understand why FIFA has been reluctant to embrace video replays, challenges and the like, as it would slow down the game. Yet there is little downside to this innovation, provided it is perfectly accurate.
Certainly, there are a few million Germans that wish it was in operation in 1966.

"Our toughest and most difficult opponent at the moment is – Real Zaragoza" – Albert Celedes of … Real Zaragoza.
Capello is fab-ulous for England
England's hunt for a new coach is about to come to an end with Fabio Capello set to be announced as Steve McClaren's replacement.
Capello, 61, speaks limited English, but his pedigree in the game speaks for itself. Virtually every newspaper on Fleet Street, from The Sun to the Guardian, is backing him to land the lucrative position.
Many Englishmen would have preferred Jose Mourinho to get the job, but once the former Chelsea boss decided to exclude himself from consideration, Capello emerged as the overwhelming favorite.
David Beckham has yet to mention his preference for the next England manager. The appointment of Capello would leave the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder in an interesting position.
Capello managed Beckham at Real Madrid and was so furious at his decision to join the Galaxy that he dropped Beckham from the team and vowed not to select him again. However, Beckham forced his way back into the lineup with hard work and determination and earned Capello's undying gratitude by helping Real win the Spanish title last season.
One thing is for certain: Capello will not be afraid to make changes. Whereas McClaren was afraid to drop either Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard – both great players but whom can clearly not fit into the same team – Capello would not shy away from such tough decisions.
His appointment could also mean Blackburn's David Bentley, ignored by McClaren because of his refusal to play in the Under-21 European Championships, is in line for a call-up.
